Thys, a healthy motivated smart young man who started his first semester at Orange County High School in the Fall of 2017, experienced a life-changing event.
While playing JV football he collapsed on the field with a very serious life-threatening brain bleed and traumatic brain injury. He was placed in a medically induced coma and under the care of the Duke PICU Team. Once stable enough, he was discharged from Duke and began inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation. He had to learn to walk, talk, eat and drink again on his own. After 9 months, Thys is doing well, even challenging himself by doing several push-ups a day. He has given 100 % effort to rehabilitation, homeschooling & giving back to the community.
Thys is a country music fan, what better way to smile than to take in a Luke Bryan show! Meg’s Smile Foundation provided Thys and his family with VIP tickets to see Luke Bryan in style!
